This semester in my DFX 352 class, Project Research Management, I have decided I want to focus on my concept art and design skills. Starting off, I decided I was most interested in weapon design, and it would also be a good jumping point for when I continue this project in DFX 452 next semester, as I plan to then model the concepts I create this semester. I plan to create these concepts based on a short story I wrote for a previous class, with plenty of fantasy elements within it.
With that in mind, I’m beginning my multi-week project with a lot of research into weapon design. Luckily for me, it turns out that the month of September just so happens to be “Swordtember”, a month-long art challenge on social media where artists are challenged with a theme each day, and create sword concepts for these themes each day (or as often as they can/choose to). So, this gives me a lot of options and concepts to look at each day. Although, I will also need to put in some research into other weapon choices as well.
For my first week, I’m just researching and saving concept images that I enjoy and compiling them into one file. From there, I will begin my research into concept design as an art, looking into tips and pointers from online sources, and practice sketching existing concepts of weapons from these images I have compiled.
